I Couldn't make it up to Phoenix for the New Years Day hike but I was able to get out and do a hike in my local area. I have lived in the area by Colossal Cave Mountain Park for many years but have never hiked the trails in it except the portion of the Arizona Trail that passes through it. I was cleaning floors at home and my lower back was giving me fits for the last week and figured a hike couldn't hurt so I picked some easy trails. The trails in this park are easy going easy to follow without much elevation gain. I actually felt much better after the hike which gives me confidence on the trip I'm planning to the Goldfield mountains next week.

There are a lot of trails in this park, all of them less than 1.5 miles in length. With the aid of Google Earth I put together some other decommissioned trails and came up with a 10 mile hike. I can't call it a loop, looks more like a drunkards path. If you take it too fast I think you would get dizzy. Was actually quite a challenge connecting all the trails keeping the repeat and backtrack to a minimum.

These trails are nothing to write home about, a couple of interesting areas though. Path of the Ancients Trail has informative signs about the Hohokam that inhabited the area. Fall color change would be a good time to go and spring blooming would be interesting. I particularly liked the views of Rincon Peak with a cluster of three closer peaks. Posta Quemada Ranch has a museum and a children's petting zoo (Goats, Pigs, sheep, donkeys and I think an alpaca). If you ever get done doing the floors in your house and your back is killing you this is the hike for you.
