| no partners | | It is that time of year again to hike the Superstitions. I am looking at focusing on the Eastern side this year. Planned on a three day trip of single day hikes along Forest Service Road 287. My plan was to do the West Pinto Creek/Rock Canyon, Bull Basin/Paradise and the Haunted Canyon Trail. Due to Rain on Monday morning I got a late start and changed my plans. Only had time for a short hike the first day so I chose the Upper Haunted Canyon to just past the saddle down to Dirt tank at the junction with the Paradise Trail. Since I also had a little extra time I also drove up to the Miles Trail Head and checked it out.
The upper portion of the Haunted Canyon Trail was in good shape easy to follow. Steep toward the saddle but not a real challenge. Water was in every creek and even at the saddle water was seeping out of the ground. The water tank on the south side of the saddle was overflowing. I did not see the bear but I must of spooked one coming up the trail because it left some nice prints and you could see it was running (or what ever bears do). On the saddle I could see some really big thunderheads toward Phoenix. I am assuming this was the storm responsible for the hail storm in Phoenix Monday afternoon.
At the Miles Ranch Trail Head I checked out West Pinto Creek. It was running pretty good but you could see it was running quite a bit more a few days prior. probably from the storm the week before. It looked like it was running 50 to 100 yards across and probably over 5 feet deep in the center. On the drive up to Globe Monday morning I saw a little snow on the side of the road along Hwy 77 as I passed over the Pinal Mountains, that kind of surprised me. Tomorrow I will hike the Bull Basin and Paradise Trails. I heard they were a bit grown over so I will see. |
