| no partners | | Excellent hike from Daylight Pass Road about 22 miles north of Furnace Creek. While the peak's location is shown on the park's maps, it is not highly advertised in their literature. However, it is a great hike to a point with 360 degree views and there is a nice arch near the top. The trail is not well signed but there are cairns along the way and the trail is visible everywhere except the wash area for the first mile or so. (To the "leave no trace" fanatics, leave these cairns alone; they will prevent a good number of people from getting lost. They might even be maintained by park personnel.) The trail is very steep and slippery due to loose rock and soil over the last several hundred feet near the top, but is manageable for most fit hikers. We didn't see anyone else on what was a magnificent day for hiking. This hike flies under the radar for Death Valley NP. This is a real winner.
There are two trailheads to start the hike (we used the upper one) but they converge a few hundred yards in. The maps provided at the park visitor center are not very good. There are two routes shown on their handout, but the west-most one appears to be eroded away at several places. I recommend the east-most track. Another drawback is that there is no grid or scale on their map for navigation. Also, it shows a loop around at the top to approach the last climb from the north. Ignore that and approach straight up in a NW direction, unless you're looking for some class 4 adventure. Not sure why they hand this map out, since it is misleading. They don't provide a gpx track.
