| partners | | we decided to day hike this section in two or three segments
an out and back backpack would have required lugging a lot of water
after finishing AZT #27, we drove up to mormon lake and knocked out the six mile piece north from double springs trailhead
easy hiking and the nicest trail of the trip
found a decent campsite off forest road 240
saturday morning drove back to double springs and planned to hike at least 8 miles south, with the option of finishing on sunday if we weren't feeling the full monty
set out around 0645 with light loads in the backpacks
the first part of the trail was a little rocky, but the rest was pretty flat with smooth trail
got to eight miles and decided to go all the way to gooseberry springs
hit the gate and headed back
somewhere along here we weren't paying attention, so got some extra credit mileage for the day - like we needed that
occasional cloud cover, a breeze, some shade and an easy grade made this doable
this was the longest hike i've done in at least five years (25.25; as i'm putting both pieces in the same triplog)
not the most exciting passage, but pretty country hiking in the pines
saw half dozen hikers, backpackers and mountain bikers along the way
feeling a little beat up, we decided to head back to the valley
got our money's worth for one trip
stopped for thai food in payson - love that place
saw some nice storms brewing on the drive back
great trip with good company
thanks, john! |
