Headed up north to find a place to hike that wouldn't be too hot. Headed up the 87 to Lake Mary Rd, parked at the Gooseberry Springs TH, and started up the Arizona Trail section 29. This section of the AZT starts at Allan Lake Landing, the stopping point for an old railroad that hauled timber. The trail crosses the highway almost immediately and goes through a meadow before getting into the pines. About a half mile in by the meadow, I smelled a strong smell of death and began looking around for whatever it was. I found it, right off the trail lying in the tall grass, it was a horse. It did not look to have been there long as it was still intact minus its eyes. I did not see any signs of trauma but I could not see the other side and no way was I going to touch it as it was covered in flies and the vultures were in the trees waiting. As I continued, the trail came off the old railroad bed and headed southeast into the forest, this part of the hike should be called the pine cone trail, as it was littered with 1,000's of them which are very annoying to step on. Very minimal elevation gain as the trail zig zagged through the forest eventually heading north. A little over 5 miles in, just past Patch Tank, I came to a small canyon where the trail started a 200-foot climb. I noticed the clouds starting to build and not wanting to get caught in a thunderstorm I decided to hike down the canyon where my map showed a road through Bear Park where I could jump back on the old railroad bed and take that back. Once I got to Bear Park, however, it was marked as private property, so I bushwhacked up a small hill to rejoin the AZT and head back. It was a hot but uneventful hike back. I hate how my body responds to heat, (anything above 80 and it throws a fit) and it has gotten worse since my heat stroke incident a couple of years back. I heard some rumble of thunder about a mile from the TH and had a dog join me for a minute that was with a trailer that was camping nearby. Except for a couple of cow elk, I did not come across anything else. The end of summer can't come soon enough
