| no partners | | Waterfall Rock Canyon
This is another good trek for summer days. Lots of shade and a gentle sloping canyon.
At Pena Blanca Lake take the canyon West of the lower picnic area.
It takes about 15 minutes to get to a small waterfall with a pool at least 50 feet across.
There is a way to skirt around and above the waterfall and head up the canyon which gets really narrow in places. (Not as narrow as Aztec canyon.) There is also a path that goes over and around this to the left of the pool.
At the 1.2 mile mark there is a small balanced rock. Every year the base seems to get smaller. There are other balanced rocks in this area. This is the backside of Tarantella Butte.(rock)
Half a mile beyond this the canyon narrows again and there is a 15 foot seasonal waterfall. On the ridge to the North of are two buttes. There is a sketchy way to the top of the biggest one. The other one has a survey marker at the base which I found…. When I tripped over it.
On the return trip I found a strata of quartz and a balanced rock that is only visible on the way back.
About a 3 mile round trip, if you go straight in and back, with lots of opportunities to rock hop.. There are several other small canyons to explore and an old hidden mine below the buttes.
Above Waterfall Spring is Waterfall rock. This is a fun climb with some scrambling but not much exposure unless you decide to find some. The view of the lake up there is amazing. I thought I had found a register at the top BUT when I opened the box I got a face full of ashes. My apologies to whomever is in the box. |
