This road is Santa Gertrudis on the map
Cross gas line road. Gas line is a lot of fun if you have a serious 4wd.
-
at the 1.6 mile point take the road to the left which drops down into the canyon.
The "road" to the right leads to a turnaround and a good place to park while you climb Tumacacori.
A 2x4 truck can make this road to where I stopped on this hike.
-
At the 2.2 miles there is a really nice shady spot. There are some rotting wooden benches and a small rock wall or foundation.
-
at the 2.75 mile mark there is a road to the Left that leads to some mining areas and good rock scrambling' with good view of the valley. Don't turn left here.
-
2.89 miles is a good place to stop and hike. In the next 200 yards from here the road turns into steps and sideways slide that you need a vehicle very high clearance or a quadlike thing.
I've taken my truck past this point and regretted it.
There is barely enough room for a 3 point turn.
-
I'll restart distances from this point because this is where the hike begins.
.25 miles there what looks like a rock cistern and hand dug well and what looks like a rock dog house.
(There is a mining road that leads off the north from here for a couple of miles to some mining areas. I found blackberries on the day I got to the end of the road. That's a triplog for another day)
-
.95 miles Rock Corral Spring is on the right with some rock tanks to the left. It looks like this was repaired as part of a Boy Scout Project a while back.
So far the road has been a pretty gentle walk.
-'
Everything after the Spring is steep. Then it gets steeper. And then the road turns upside down.
1.32 is as far as my Silverado has made it. There is a wide spot in the road here.
After this point the road gets very steep and there are places that even some quads won't go.
-
A few years ago the road was cleaned up with a bulldozer and it stopped at the 1.6 mile point.
1.8 is a good jump off point for a couple of saddles along the ridge to the South.
-
The one to the west has a South facing shelter cave or two.
The next to the East has a couple of interesting rock columns in it.
From Tumacacori peak they look like two teeth.
2 mile point the road ends at the base of what looks like a rock slide.
There are some cool finds up here that include:
a balanced rock
small window
Shelter caves 200 yards beyond the mine
Memorial cross hidden under a tree to the East of the slide
Mine tunnel entrance below the slide.
Above the mining area there is an orange wheelbarrow which seems kind of random. ( I set it upright whenever I come this way.)
To the South of this and along the base of the cliffs is a memorial to someone. (small shelter cave) There are some mementos arranged like a small shrine. Walking stick-shoes-grill-Candle in a glass-pots, fire ring and pans etc.
This is very well hidden and I found it by accident on the way back looking for shade. You can’t see this until you are right on top of it.
-
another odd find was 3 shoves, no handles, arranged on a rock. No path, no nuthin.
Everything I found on this trip was happenstance. Makes me wonder what I didn’t find.
-
I turned around at the 2.25 point. There was a 100+ foot cliff. I was about half a mile from my goal and sometimes good is good enough.
-
This is a good hike in the cool months. I like the view and the challenge of the elevation gain.
Depending on where you park and what side trips you take you can cover, round trip, 2 miles to upwards of 7.
The longest I've poked around this area is 12 hours.
It's remote and quiet. There is cell reception at the memorial memento shelter cave and at the two saddles mentioned earlier.
-In the winter I always come back to the shady spot at the 2.2 mark and have a fire and food.
