1st trip
Scooted over to Elko yesterday hoping to check out the Ruby Mountains. Originally wanted to backpack, but the cold deterred me somewhat. The drive into town was extremely hazy, and I couldn't even see the mountains. Fortunately the high winds that accompanied the cold apparently got rid of the haze...

Anyways, it was in the mid 20s when I started. Yay summer. Kept my windbreaker on until about 13 miles in.

I had no real plan, didn't look at mileage, but had the idea that if my sense of scale weren't too far off, Wines Peak could be a good objective. The glacial lakes made for some great scenery along the way.

On the way up to the summit, the views started becoming more expansive, and I knew it would be worth it. Indeed, Wines Peak afforded excellent views of the Ruby Dome ridge, the mountains continuing north and south, and out over the basin to the east. It was about 9.4 miles and 3200 feet of climbing to get there.

On the way back, I decided to take Favre Lake Trail, which probably added half a mile at the most.

Decided that while I'm here, I may as well tack on the Island Lake trail. It was OK, but my least favorite Island Lake so far.

Wonderful area, and very low traffic compared to recent trails I've been on. Only problem is I wish I could have seen the whole trail.
