| no partners | | This one has been on my list for a while so I decided to get it done today while Cathy is laid up since she firmly dislikes rocky trails anyway. I've always been attracted to springs, (as well as small shiny objects) and this one has escaped me. I've been by the turnoff several times when on 252 in the Tonto National Forest but never made the climb till now.
I hiked through the Spur Cross Ranch property to get into the TNF and Trail 252. The turnoff is marked by an old cowboy stone with directions chiseled on. There are several of these along the trail marking the different springs accessible from 252 including Limestone, Page, Peterson, Ringneck, and Rondo. Photos of two of them are in my photoset.
The final 1/2 mile up to the spring is rough going and overgrown but well cairned. I had no trouble with route finding at all. Coming back down would have been very difficult except for the fact that I had the smarts and forethought to spray paint red arrows all the way up so I could find my way back. On the way back down I gave them a second coat for good measure.
The area around the spring was lush and beautiful. There was a steady trickle into a full spring box. There is another box upstream and I'm going to assume that was full also. I didn't want to climb any more! There were many large old growth trees at the spring that I assumed were Hackberry but the veining in the leaf I brought home doesn't match up. Any help with an ID would be appreciated as well as another plant in the photoset. |
