The beginning of the hike is a bit underwhelming but don’t give up because soon it opens up and is really beautiful! There are a few obstacles to work around that were pretty easy to navigate. Some groups seemed to be having a hard time figuring out the route around the 30 ft {dry} waterfall but we bypassed on the right with no issues. There were cairns in the places where you should cross the wash and every bypass is easy (and fun!) to figure out.
We made it to the river and took a long break to enjoy the views, eat snacks and for me to cool down in the shade. We saw a group of people studying the cliff walls a little bit further down the river, and James grew very curious. It looked like they’d maybe found some petroglyphs because they were taking lots of up close photos. As James grew more curious, it started rubbing off on me so we went over there to check it out. It was a hot bushwhack with boulders to climb over and once we got close they let us know they were out there working/ site surveying, not hunting petroglyphs, oooops.
We still had to drive back to Scottsdale so we opted to head back and finished just before sunset. The hike is easy and fun but the heat was a bit rough for me given the canyon walls hold so much heat! If I did this hike again I’d probably wait until it was a bit cooler, but definitely enjoyed this one! |
