| no partners | | A friend is visiting me here in Moab. It's hard to figure out where to take her in ONLY 3 days of hiking and paddling. Since I have a friend who's a ranger at Dead Horse Point State Park who lets me in for free, we decided to check it out. (We contributed to the park by buying t-shirts.) My ranger friend recommended the Bighorn Point Trail, since it's a great view, without being crowded. Good advice. Although we saw other hikers, there weren't many. Included in my GPS route is the walk out to the point right next to the visitor center.
There's no parking at the trailhead, which starts in the Kayenta Campground, so you have to park by the visitor center, and walk there, unless you're lucky enough to have a campsite.
The easy hike is pretty straightforward to follow, with cairns placed across slickrock sections. Great view at the end, although it took a fair amount of cajoling to convince my friend she could make it out to the very end of the point. There are a great many potholes at the point, only a few of which had a bit of water in them. I suspect that they usually would have more, but are empty due to the drought.
There is no river view from this hike. The river view is from Dead Horse Point, which you can drive to. |
