Since it was such a quick trip, we stopped at only one of the side attractions, a large ancient cliff house called the River House. It was interesting to see it is in the process of being stabilized. We camped at Big Stick, which turned out to be a great location with many cottonwood trees. The three rapids were fun, not too hard, and it was a nice group of people.
Originally I had planned to go on with the rest of the group to Clay Hills, but opted to take out with my friend Helen at Mexican Hat. The river had come up a little the day we started, but was forecast to drop by half during our trip. She was rowing an 18-foot cataraft, and it was clear there would not be enough water in the river downstream to float it in many places. Later on, in Blanding, we talked to a man who'd had to drag his 14-footer over a lot of sandbars downriver from Mexican Hat.
