| no partners | | From my son's home near Jacksonville, Florida, to Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia is only about 35 minutes. I was getting close to the end of my two-month trip to Florida, and finally got a chance to get away from the family activities and go paddling in this famous place. It sure didn't disappoint.
I saw only one alligator, however. It was kind of chilly that day, starting out in the 40's as I recall. I saw some sandhill cranes, egrets and turtles. I met three random groups of paddlers, and all had at least one person with ties to Grand Canyon. Long story. But in a way, not surprising, because it's a premier destination for multiday canoeing and kayaking. There are many platforms to camp on. It's difficult to get the permit nowadays, also, I was told, due to high use. You have to put in for it the minute it opens up on Recreation . gov
Anyway, I'm glad I went, even though I paddled only 8 miles. Enjoy the photos! By the way, in that area, kayakers are respectful but unafraid of gators, similar to how we Arizonans approach rattlesnakes. I was told that especially in winter they are very sluggish, and want nothing to do with you. Keep your distance, and you can take all the photos you want. |
