| no partners | | This hike is very close to where my brother and his wife live along the Salmon River, south of Challis. I was visiting there in June. This trail was developed by the BLM to see the upright sequoia stumps on a hillside, which were covered in volcanic ash 50 million years ago (so are geologically about 150 million years younger than the ones at Petrified Forest in Arizona.) The volcano in question can be seen on the drive between Challis and Salmon, called Twin Peaks. It used to be one peak, before it blew its top.
The hike is very easy, and there are helpful signs along the way. The sequoia trees are each surrounded by a chain link fence, I guess to prevent fossil wood theft. Not very photogenic. The whole area is so dry, I don't find it very attractive, unless I am right down on the river, or out in the irrigated farms. My brother and his wife consider it to be paradise. I think it's a nice place to visit... |

Wildflowers Observation None Dry as a bone. Some of the sagebrush has died. Now, THAT is dry! |
