| no partners | | When I went to Idaho, I took along my whitewater inflatable kayak. But, judging the Salmon River next to my brother's house, south of Challis, and scouting its easy sections down near that town, I realized it was too cold, there were too many unknowns, and I hadn't even brought a wetsuit. I didn't know anyone to go with me. So, I would have been breaking all the rules and could end up dead in a strainer. (I almost drowned once in a strainer on the San Juan 2 years ago, and had to extricate myself, because my partner was downstream. I was very, very lucky.)
So, long story short, I still wanted State Number 11 on my "list of states where I've kayaked." Redfish Lake, near Stanley, is not too far from my brother's place, so I drove up there, rented a leaky bathtub at the resort, and paddled to the far end of the lake. (Since @joebartels doesn't offer "bathtub" as a choice on the dropdown menu, I picked "kayak.") I was glad I sprung for the half-day option on the rental. That way I didn't feel rushed, because that thing was slow! Right now, remembering that day, it was worth the 40 bucks to me, although I did wish I had carried my sea kayak to Idaho.
The photos speak for themselves. If I go to Redfish Lake another time I'll take my own boat and gear, and camp at the far end. There's a significant network of trails that loop out from there. You can hike in from near the resort, I think, if you want to do a backpacking trip. I'm not sure all the rules, but I'd bring a bear canister. If kayak camping, I could stay a couple nights and do a long dayhike from there.
I'd like to visit my brother again next summer, but he has Alzheimer's, so I don't know how he will be then. It's very sad. |
