The hike itself is short but traverses an interesting mix of areas including a marsh/lake, broadleaf forest, and dunes. My favorite part of the hike is through the forest that has hard maple as the primary species. Everything is so darn green and the birds are really loud!
This hike is a somewhat hidden gem even though the park borders I-94. Most people park and take a much shorter route to the Northern end of the park and beach.
Southwest Michigan is a real wonderland with a bunch of high quality wineries. breweries, good food, great beaches and some decent Midwestern hikes (read flat). This region also has the second most diverse agricultural region of the US with hundreds of different fruits, vegetables and animal products being grown and raised.
There were 6 cars in the parking lot at 4 PM and the temps were in the mid 70's. I saw about 6 people on the hike and 4 people on the beach. This park rarely feels crowded even during a holiday weekend if you are willing to walk south a little on the beach. |
