His wife Mindy worked at Sarett Nature Center for over 30 years and handed me a trail map while I was over visiting.
Sarett is the largest hiking area in Berrian County (to my knowledge). I had some extra time prior to my flight back to the valley so I drove out I-196 to check out some of the trails.
The area is a mix of native prairie, upland forest and swampier creek bed bottom land. Much of the forest is quite mature and there are some very large oaks and maples. I walked the longest trails to the edges of the park to the east and then the west. The beauty of these hardwood forests and open meadows is pretty astounding.
This territory is a prime birding area and while I didn't see too many birds. I did see a massive amount of Cow Veatch and a few beautiful Michigan Lilly's.
I saw almost no one all day and the trails even featured a few switchbacks!!
This hike capped of a busy week of mainly business, but I am glad I was able to revisit some fascinating areas of my former home. |
