The gate to the entrance of the forest was wide open, but the 'road closed sign was still up. All of the roads were pretty easy to drive but the last mile to the trailhead was rutted.
We decided to go CCW and within 50 feet saw 3 mountain bikers who were the only people we saw all day.
This trail was a great introduction to the White Mountains. What was very clear is that the public/private partnership that encompasses the White Mountains Trail System (for at least this trail) is successful in keeping the trails well marked and excellently maintained.
Most of the hike is through a forest of healthy pines and some juniper. The grasses have retained some of their green and this area had the healthiest feel to it from our 3 hikes this weekend. The cabins were cool enough, but far less intact than what is found in the Cabin Loop or elsewhere.
Altogether, this was a very mellow stroll with only one or two areas of elevation change. The only other observation of significance was the smoke we saw coming from south of US 60 and a few miles west of our hike. |
