Last hike for our week up in Colorado. The Trailhead for this hike is in the middle of a neighborhood down the hill from Purgatory/Durango Mountain Resort which is where we have been staying.

This trail is one of the closer trails to Durango. The parking lot has been pretty close to full each time we have driven by. Today there were maybe 2 or 3 spots available.

Things start by going through a pretty Aspen forest with some moderate switchbacks for about a mile. The bottom of this section opens up to a wide meadow area with Cascade Creek running through on one side. This meadow section is called Purgatory Flat and goes for about a mile.

The trail then climbs 300' up above Cascade Creek and winds through a mixed forest of Ponderosa Pine, Fir and Aspen. After two miles the Animas River and railroad tracks come into view. After some somewhat steep switchbacks the trail meets the Animas River. A bridge crosses the river at this point with some great camp sites on both sides of the river.

We hung out by the river for about an hour and met some backpackers that were stuck in the rain in Chicago Basin for the past two days.

We saw 10 or 12 backpackers and a few hikers throughout the day. We took some very light rain on the way back to the car, but altogether the temperature was super comfortable in the low 70's all day.
