| partners | | Had a super long crazy week and come Friday I thought it was still Thursday… The weather was going to be messy wherever in AZ, but I was craving some forest temps so I opted to join some friends camping near WCC. I got up there Saturday morning and told the group I had an idea that was probably crazy, and possibly a horrible idea. Obviously, everyone was in.
My crazy idea was to do a quick off trail hike in the woods above WCC and check out some unique views down into the canyon. I had no idea if any trail existed but I had us heading towards a pin that was above Sundance canyon. I figured there could be some cool views there! We didn’t have too much time before the skies were going to downpour on us, so this was at least safer than going into the canyon… maybe
Getting down to the viewpoints wasn’t too bad. There was some bushwhacking and climbing over/around downed trees but definitely not anything too aggressive. When we first saw the views, everyone was pretty happy! I’ve seen into WCC before, but never from this angle so it was cool! The weather was amazing the whole hike; humid, but we stayed dry!
Looking down into WCC you could see that the water levels were high. There were some cascades that looked like they’d be tough to try to wade through. It was also fully muddy - the water looked like Yoo-hoo! We stopped at many different viewpoints along the edge of the canyon and took a nice break to enjoy the views. The skies started looking a bit sketchy so we headed back up. There was a good amount of scrambling involved to get back up from our break spot and the uphill was steep for the exit.
It was a nice quick workout with gorgeous views, timed perfectly to keep us dry! No one died or complained about the off trail stuff and/or my strange ideas so I’ll call it a win! Bonus that there was ZERO other vehicles at the TH and we had the whole area to ourselves. Woohoo! |
