| partners | | This starts off as a sandy, exposed trail that leads to a wash type area (dry). The geology on the approach to the slot was super unique and interesting. Upon arrival at the slot, we met a couple who were leaving and told us we’d need to remove packs to fit through the slot. They also let us know it was very tight in several places.
Becky and I started off prior to the rest of the group and pretty much immediately realized we definitely needed to remove and stow away our packs. There is an extremely narrow area right in the beginning that requires you to step sideways with your feet bent outwards and just shimmy your way through. FYI - It was tight so anyone that’s larger build (especially if not tall) may not fit though.
We continued on in the slot and were just completely blown away by the striped canyon walls. They were absolutely stunning. A small group of 3 entered just behind us and someone from that group gave me a slight boost up one tricky section. We continued through the canyon until a final tricky scramble that had a gorgeous view back down the slot canyon. We could not continue after that point as there was a keeper pothole too dangerous to maneuver around without rope.
The rest of our group joined us then Becky and I headed back to get our packs and rest/snack up for the hike out. The hike out was hot, exposed and sandy. We were thankful for an earlier start time this day as we were able to get finished, back to camp to pack up and on the road back to phx by noon!
Zebra was a stunner! Loved it! |
