I’ve always wanted to do the RR Tunnel trail and it seemed like the perfect choice for a quick solo hike before returning to the valley. I arrived at the TH and there were no other vehicles there so I was psyched!
The descent is fairly steep with some loose rocks so I took it slow. There was a little bit of flowing water to the immediate left of the trail towards the beginning section. You keep going down until there is a fork. I actually found this trail sign a tad confusing since there were 3 different paths. You’ll want to start heading UP to get to the tunnel. The trail is fairly non existent in this portion and you’ll have to climb over some deadfall. There were some helpful cairns to lead the way. The climb was short, but it definitely got my heart rate up a bit!
Upon arriving at the tunnel you’ll see a large dwelling/ ruin to your right… it appears to not be original but it’s in decent shape. The tunnel itself doesn’t go back too far but the view looking out from the tunnel is stunning! It was nice and cool in there too which was great.
I walked around to get a better look at the dwellings from the top and noticed a faint path heading up to exit. It looked doable and like it would dump me on the road, but I opted to head back the way I came so I could enjoy the quiet trail a bit longer.
I noticed there was a stream on the map so I took a detour down to check it out before my climb out. It was completely dry, even after all the rain we’ve had. I turned around and headed back up the steep hill. The skies were starting to look questionable so I thought I made the right call. In fact it had just started raining just as I was finishing. Overall, a super cool short hike a unique destination. Really enjoyed my solo time on this trail! |
