Even though most of the hike is a forest road, it is a surprisingly rough road to hike. More erosion in several places, and lots of marble sized gravel covering the road in steep places. Nice breeze on the way up. The kids played on the old mining equipment for a few minutes, then we headed over to the mines. Rather warm on the road in front of the mines, and very buggy, and also a lot of wasps flying in and out of the mines. After that, we backtracked and took the upper road towards Asbestos Point, cutting off trail to save some distance. The final 150’ of gain was very steep as usual, with only a vague hint of a route. Took a break at the top, then headed back down. Easy hike back to the vehicle, with only some care needed to not slip in the steeper spots.
The road from 188 to Pocket Spring is in rougher shape than it was last year. Medium clearance definitely required to that point, and it was slow going in a few places. After Pocket Spring, you would absolutely need high clearance 4wd, and there are a couple of very narrow spots.
Nice day with the kids and always a good hike for some solitude. |
