I could easily have parked near the spring and saved 1.30 miles of road walk in each direction--will remember that for next time. After the spring, the condition of the road deteriorated considerably, but still fairly easy hiking. Some gravel spots to be careful of loose footing, but nothing too bad. A few places of mud on the road, but most was easily avoided. Near the top, the kids played on the old machinery, then we walked over to the mines, peeking inside each one. Great views to the south with the clouds and rain over Roosevelt Lake.
After the mines, we had a snack break, then headed up to Asbestos Point. We followed the old road part of the way, then decided to head cross country to save some of the road walk, probably cutting off about a quarter mile each way. Short but steep final push to the top, which the kids easily handled. We took another short break up top, then retraced our steps back down. Nice walk back down to the car. Mixture of clouds and sun today, with a great breeze and perfect temps, but no rain. The kids loved the hike and want to come back soon for Zimmerman. |
