I started off in open country, went up a canyon for a short distance, then went up a gully to a ridgeline, which took me to the summit.
This was a fun and enjoyable hike. I am not usually a big fan of boulder hopping/rock scrambling in a gully, but this one was not bad. It did get a bit steep at the upper part though, but the footing was generally solid. Once on the ridgeline, I generally stayed close to it, but not necessarily right on top of it. There was some fun scrambling on the final push to the summit, including one class 3 move with some ever-so-slight exposure.
Views were great at the summit, so I hung out there a bit before descending back down.
About 1/2 mile into the hike I saw 3-4 bighorn sheep, but they didn't hang around long, so they were apparently camera shy.
Shortly after I started the hike, I discovered that I dropped the lower shaft of one of my trekking poles, and had to go back and retrieve it. I was on relatively flat ground and just had the poles in my hand without having the shafts clamped down. Going back to find and get it added a half mile or so to the hike.
I really enjoyed this hike -- much more so than I thought that I would. |
