Bryce has an elevation of 7,298 feet and prominence of 2,228 feet. The latter number gets the attention of those afflicted with peakbagger disease, not that I know anyone like that!
The few people who hike up to this peak seem to come in from the south, off of Highway 70. I decided to go a different route for a couple of reasons. One, I never heard many good things about that route. Second, I had a sneaky suspicion that going in that way might require dealing with some pesky "posted no trespassing" signs. So we decided to do the hike from the San Carlos Reservation. We bought permits in Globe and then drove 55-60 miles into the reservation, the last 9.5 miles of which required a high clearance 4WD vehicle, and took a little over an hour to drive.
I had plotted out a route from Route Cloud and it amazingly turned out quite well. The first couple of miles were on an old jeep type road, and then we were mostly in open country heading up to a couple of ridgelines on our way to the summit.
There were some cool views at the summit. Snow covered Mount Graham was front and center to the west, and we could see the White Mountains off to the east. We saw the benchmark, one reference mark, and a boundary marker near the summit. We signed the summit register log which has had only a few entries over the years.
This was a fun hike and it is good peak to summit. I enjoy the area, but it is hard to describe how remote the area is -- there is literally almost nothing out there.
In case anyone is wondering, Bryce Mountain was named for Ebenezer Bryce, who founded a Mormon settlement in the area in 1883. |
