| no partners | | I decided to go hike up to a couple of peaks that I had never done before:
1) Oatman Mountain
2) Margies Peak
Oatman
Oatman Mountain is in SW Maricopa County, about 25 miles NW of Gila Bend. It has the lowest summit elevation of Arizona's 430 peaks with 1,000 or more feet of prominence.
The hike is a walk on a service road up to an antenna farm -- kind of like a mini Mount Ord hike.
The area has some interesting history and geology, so to me it was an enjoyable road walk.
Margies
Hiking to Margies Peak is almost totally a rock and boulder scramble -- the polar opposite of a road walk.
It was a fun scramble, and it did not seem as steep as it looked. There was a good bit of what I would call class 2 hiking, but there was nothing worse than that.
I went up the south ridge, which is the way that most others on this site seem to do it. Unlike one or two others, I went back the same way that I came up.
Synopsis
I enjoyed these 2 hikes, and I am glad that I picked a cool, mostly cloudy day to do them. Both have lots of sun exposure, and I would not want to hike them on a hot day.
Distance and elevation gain for the two hikes is below. Stats above are the sum of the 2.
Oatman: 4.73 miles with 1,223 feet of AEG
Margies: 2.97 miles with 1,414 feet of AEG |
