| no partners | | I drove to the trailhead off FR 81E. The road was rough the last 1/4 mile. I came prepared to do some trail work: move rocks and build cairns, but the gate was wired open at the top of the canyon, and the cattle had opened up the trail all the way down. There is no missing it now! I thought I'd catch the fall colors under the arch, but missed it by probably 2 weeks. Alot of green leaves on the ground suggest a hard frost and strong wind. The nice thing about the lack of vegetation was that I could see more of the rocks. The New Mexico locust still managed to get to me despite my garden clippers to clear the trail! Below the arch, I heard loud buzzing--like you hear when you are very near a bee hive. But I didn't see a single bee the entire day. I guess they were staying in, out of the wind and cold. I hiked downstream about 1 more mile following the streambed or game trails before turning around to get home by sundown. The only wildlife was a coyote I spooked above the arch. |
