I left the Webb Peak Trail and made it to the peak at my turn around time. A solitary stone atop a boulder at the summit of the peak was the "summit register". I added a second rock. At this point, I figured I may as well just make a loop out of the hike, and continue east along the ridge. I repeatedly found and then lost trail #344 (an ancient logging road) along the ridge and came close to breaking my ankle in the fern meadow, before I got to the recognizable wagon trail (near point 9031') shown on the USGS map at dusk. I followed the trail for aways before just heading straight down the mountainside for Ash Creek. I stumbled onto the Ash Creek Detour Trail, and followed it back to the Ash Creek Trail. By the time I reached the mill site, I had to break out the flashlight, which I hooked onto my waist belt. I found that this provided better illumination and depth for the surface of the trail. This was a great hike, with a very scenic off trail jaunt. |
