The old road makes for easy hiking with no rocks to stumble over, just a covering of coarse granite sand. Wildflowers were abundant but no Mexican Gold Poppies. The desert flora has been recovering nicely from the Sept 2020 Sears Wildfire. I had some clues to the location of an ancient rock pile on a ridgetop and it turned out to be fairly significant with about 20 rooms scattered 200 yds along the ridge. Some of the rooms had semi-intact walls up to 3 to 4 ft high.
On the return I accidentally took a wrong turn on to a different track due to being too focused on keeping an eye out for rattlesnakes sunning themselves on the road. (none seen) I didn't discover my mistake until I had gone 0.8 miles. Rather than backtrack I took off across country in a straight line for the car. The off-trail conditions were conducive to a fast pace except for the thickets of catclaw in the bottoms of the several washes I had to cross. So the hike ended up being a nice unintended lollipop loop. |
