It was one of those deceiving things where it looked like we were at the top and there was nowhere left to go up, but then we turn a corner and just kept going up. There was a sign for a side trail up to Promontory Butte that we briefly considered but decided against. It was only 3/4 mile according to the sign which didn't sound bad, but checking the topo map after the hike showed that it's more than a 2000 foot elevation gain. Glad we didn't do it! The Highline trail took us through denser forest and there were areas that were very green and pretty. Highline was a bit of a rollercoaster with some fairly steep ups and downs, but not bad taking the loop counterclockwise.
It was a breezy day. NWS issued a wind advisory, but it wasn't blowing much down among the trees. We could hear the continuous whoosh of wind through the trees though. There were some scattered flowers throughout the hike. Indian Paintbrush, yellow flowers, and others. Saw at least two little bitty horny toads, a mountain king snake, lots of butterflies, squirrels and lizards too. We passed a guy who told us that a bear had been spotted in the area, but we never saw the bear.
I have to say that I was blown away by Horton Spring and how this whole creek's worth of water just comes spilling out of a hole in the side of the mountain. Maybe that's how rivers and creeks always work, but this is the first time I've seen the source up close. Very cool. |
