Eventually found a way through the campsite to the Horton Creek Trail. First time here, stuck to the main route and avoided the creek paths, next time I'll slow down and let the kids play with the water some more. About 8 groups along the way. Spring was spectacular and much more than expected. One big deadfall south of spring on Highline Trail, rest of that trail was jaw-dropping views and a real rollercoaster. This was my first time on Highline and I'm already dreaming of thru-hiking it. Lots of cloud cover, some sprinkles, some thunder, great temps. Derrick was also a treat, with those giant manzanitas and old school junipers, though the steep rocky downhill gave my kids a few spills. This loop is an absolute gem, especially on a weekday, didn't see a soul after Horton.
Longest/hardest trip so far for the kids (6, 5, and 3), tested a few pieces of gear, think we're ready to try some backpacks in the near future! |
