Started seeing patches of snow early on and there were more and more as we kept going up. By the third switchback there were larger mounds of snow that we had to walk over. Didn't use the micro spikes we were carrying because it wasn't icy and boots got good enough traction. Also the trail was dry and sometimes rocky between snow patches. Some places had large thick mounds of snow that we had to walk around rather than climb over. It was easy finding the correct route because there were so many people on the trail you just follow the people ahead of you.
The view from the saddle was great. We tested there for a while and took pictures of the inner basin. Then it was time for the final mile to the summit. It's only a mile so how hard can it be? Harder than I expected for sure! The first hill after the saddle was the worst. Big relief when after what seemed like endless climbing the summit finally came into view.
The summit was great! Lots of people up there. Spectacular 360 degree view. I expected it to be windy at the summit but it wasn't! It was very pleasant and warm. Had a good rest, ate some snacks, signed the summit log, and felt good about knocking off a wish list hike.
Down was slow. No surprise for the steep and rocky trail back down from the summit to the saddle. But below the saddle the snow had turned very slushy and took forever. Poles helped, but I still slipped a few times in the slippery slush . It seemed like we had to cross over a lot more snow (slush) on the way down than we remembered on the way up. It was forever before we finally got back to Snow Bowl. The good news is that at the rate it was melting and the warm weather forecast for the coming days there will be a lot less snow very soon. Still it was totally worth putting up with the trail conditions for the awesome view from Humphreys Summit. |
