Starting from Tanner Trailhead we hiked in the 9 miles to the river which was running brown due to LCR flash about a week prior. At the river we hiked down the Escalante Route to below Basalt Rapids to our put in spot. From there we packrafted to Unkar and portaged that rapid. Then a short float to Rattlesnake which was our camp for the night. There was a boater group already on the beach so we had to find a spot but not an issue. Also with the river being brown we brought a couple of buckets and alum which worked great. Dave prepped and applied the alum which worked within several hours and nearly crystal clear for filtering.
Next morning we headed up the same ridge as we did in May to hit Solomon Temple. There is a good boater use trail for The Tabernacle that we followed part of the way before heading off trail. There is a long saddle between the two that we crossed before traversing the east slope of Solomon. Once around the traverse we ascended the south slope until we reached the class 3 scramble. Nothing two crazy and was fun to figure out the layers and breaks to the summit. On the summit we took a long break to enjoy the views. IMO it's one of the better summits with a classic summit top and 360 views.
After summit break we headed back down mostly the same way. The only difference being that we decided to hike The Tabernacle again which really only added about 200 extra AEG and maybe 3/4 of a mile to the trip. From Tabernacle we picked up the use trail and followed that back to river.
Once back at the river we floated down canyon to another beach below 75 mile Canyon for camp. Another relaxing night at camp filtering water with the bucket system. Next morning we continued to New Hance and our exit trail. Really like New Hance compared to other trails in the canyon. Red Canyon is always great scenery which provides some distraction during the climb out. Another great trip in the canyon |
