| partners | | Day 2 of our hikes around Bryce we drove to Grand View Trailhead on FR87. Good dirt road most of the way and trailhead was empty upon arrival. From the TH we dropped about 250 feet and 1/2 mile to the junction with Grand View Trail which in total is about 80 miles long under the rim.
Our section today was only about 4.5 miles of it below the Pink Cliffs section. At the junction we headed west which was really spectacular for an area not in the park itself. The traverse has some sporty sections where the steep cliffs and tight canyons create narrow trail. No serious exposure but enough to keep the attention. Took our time through here and lots of pics to be taken.
Eventually the Grand View Trail hits the Swapp Canyon junction where we split. Swapp Canyon Trail was not quite as good of trail but good enough to make it back to the rim. Once on the rim we decided to off trail instead of follow Swapp Canyon. Really we just wanted to walk along the rim and check out some view points along the way and it also took about 1.5 miles of the hike.
Found a nice viewpoint about half way across the off trail and had lunch. Unlike the previous days hike we didn’t see anyone at any point during the hike. After lunch we continued the off trail hitting a few more viewpoints. Lots of fun to hike along the rim and find a route through the pine and aspens. Eventually made it back to the trailhead which was again empty.
Great loop hike on Grad View Trail and the Pink Cliffs which despite not being in the park is a very worthy destination and trail to explore! |
