| no partners | | First time to Pass Mountain. From the Wind Cave Trailhead, we went clockwise on the Pass Mountain Loop trail. Weather was 60s-70s and sunny. Trail was pleasant, easy, and well-maintained. Nice views. There is a trail to the summit, but we walked right past it without thinking. Views were better in the north and northeast portions of the trail. Decided to take an off-trail detour to the summit (Peak 3312). It was a steady ascent with some loose rocks and mild scrambling to reach a ridgeline, then more scrambling (class 2) along the ridgeline to reach the summit. Slower going than expected, due to a number of thorny plants (all avoidable) and many loose rocks. Excellent views from the summit. Didn't see the register. Found the well-traveled but unnamed trail down from the summit. There were some steep portions with loose rocks, but mostly pretty civilized.
Saw only 6 other hikers, one mountain biker, and one trail runner. No trash. Overall very peaceful. Nice to get outside. |
