| no partners | | I pulled up to the Jerome-Grande Mine late afternoon and decided I’d check out the Mescal Gulch connector trail that Joe and Bruce have hiked in the past. I weaved my way down Hull Canyon past the no trespassing and “you’re on camera” signs at Walnut Springs to the old Jerome swimming pool site, and quickly found the route heading south up toward the top of Mescal/Hull divide. It’s a definite trail, and very steep in places. Easy to follow until the top of the ridge, with nice views of the area.
Dropping down the south side into Mescal Gulch, the route is a little harder to follow, but largely obstacle free. I noted a few old rock foundations along the route, which I believe to be the general route of the short-lived United Verde Mine aerial tramway, circa 1892. I made my way up Mescal Gulch, crossed the highway, and then went up the powerline cut to hill 6602 to connect with the Jerome-Prescott wagon road. The sun was setting but I made great time cruising east along the wagon road route. Dropped back down to the Jerome Grande Mine and my truck at dark. Nice to know about the Mescal Gulch connector, adds some options to future hikes in this fun area. |
