I wasn't 100% sure that I could get to the TH, but it worked out well. The road in had been recently graded, and even the lesser road that I drove on for the last 1/4 or so wasn't bad -- I think that a crossover SUV could have made it to where I parked. To go much further you'd need a high clearance 4WD vehicle though.
About 7.5 miles of this hike was on a road, with the remainder being off-trail. It was surprisingly easy off-trail hiking though -- in fact I thought that the off-trail portion was better than some of the road hiking.
It was a near perfect day to hike in this remote area. I saw one deer and no other humans. You are almost guaranteed solitude doing this hike, and it would be rare to encounter someone else out here.
There was a lot of up-and-down on the hike, so there was a good bit of elevation gain on the way back. The road was steep and slippery in some places, so it was slower going than most road hikes. The offset was that the off-trail portion was not bad at all: it wasn't very steep; the vegetation was fairly sparse; and there were good lanes to walk through much of the way.
When I got to the summit area I first went to the highpoint, and then went to the benchmark, which was 400-500 feet away from the highpoint. I located the benchmark and 2 reference marks.
There were nice 360 degree views at the summit, so I hung out there for a bit. I returned the way that I came.
I enjoyed this hike, and it was better than I expected it to be. |
