| no partners | | This was the first of 2 hikes that I did on this day: the summit of Cuyamaca (pronounced "kwee-e-mecca") Peak. Cuyamaca Peak has an elevation of 6,512 feet and prominence of 2,855 feet, and is the second highest peak in San Diego County. It is only 21 feet lower than Hot Springs Mountain, which is the second peak that I hiked to on the day.
Cuyamaca Peak is in the Rancho Cuyamaca State Park, and there is an entry fee of $10.
The trailhead for the hike was at the Paso Picacho Campground, and I went up and back on the Cuyamaca Peak Fire Lookout Road, which is a paved road all the way to the top. Hiking on a paved road isn't all that aesthetically pleasing, but since I had another hike to do I wanted to go the shortest and fastest way to the summit. The views were great along the way, so hiking on the road is not without merit.
It was a quick up-and-back, and I enjoyed the views along the way. I tend to prefer hiking in more remote, wilderness-type areas, so I doubt if I will repeat this hike. That said, I enjoyed the views and it really wasn't very crowded. There are some other trails that could be hiked to get to the summit, and those would likely be more interesting than hiking on a paved road. |
