This was a hike to the summit of Cady Peak (elevation of 4,627 feet and prominence of 2,427 feet), which is in the western part of the Mojave Desert, east of Barstow, CA. Cady Peak is the highpoint of the Mojave Trails National Monument.

I drove about 6 miles on a powerline road and parked. The last 2 miles of the road were a bit rough and I was glad to have been driving a high clearance 4WD vehicle. A crossover SUV would likely find it very challenging to drive the last couple of miles.

The route was very straightforward for this hike: take a wide wash up to a ridgeline NE of the summit, and then follow the ridgeline a short distance to the summit.

The was was really wide for the first couple of miles. Vegetation was sparse, even by Mojave desert standards. There was a steady, modest grade most of the way. Eventually the wash narrowed some, and began gaining more elevation. There was a 12'-15' dryfall to negotiate, but it had good handholds and footholds, but was not a problem. As the wash got closer to the ridgeline, it got steeper with some loose terrain. There was a bit of scrambling, but nothing worse than class 2 (well maybe class 2+ in a place or 2). I would just look around and take the path of least resistance.

Once on the ridgeline it was a short, easy walk to the summit. There were great views at the summit, and I enjoyed being up there.

I descended the same way that I came up. Going down the upper part of the wash was easier than coming up it -- I could take advantage of being at an elevated position and spot some less steep ways to descend.

Synopsis
This was a fun, high quality peak to climb, and was one of the better desert peaks that I have done.
