This was the first of 2 hikes that I did on this day.

This hike went to the Loaf Benchmark on Elephant Mountain (elevation of 5,276 feet and prominence of 1,036 feet). This is NOT the Elephant Mountain at Spur Cross; rather, this particular Elephant Mountain is in Mojave County, about 12 miles SE of the town of Wikieup.

This one is referred to as "Elephant Mountain East" in order to distinguish it from another peak on the west side of Elephant Mountain, which is 28 feet lower at 5,228 feet.

I drove 13 miles off pavement on a well-graded dirt road and parked just off of the road on a lesser jeep type road.

There is no trail or road to follow on this hike. From the parking spot I could see some cliff bands just below the summit, so it was a matter of heading west on some slopes and down and over a ridge or two to get to the cliff band. The hike to that point was a bit brushy, but other than that wasn't too difficult. The brush was mostly easy to navigate around, but I would not want to wear shorts.

The hike was steep and slippery below the cliff bands. I had to traverse down below the cliff band to get to a gully that went up past the cliff band. This section was not that long -- less than 1,000 feet in distance -- but it was steep and the terrain was loose. Plus there was some vegetation that would get in your way. I took it slowly and made up past the cliff band, and it was smooth sailing to the benchmark from there.

I found the "Loaf" benchmark, but did not locate either of the 2 reference marks.

The summit is flat and mesa-like. About 1/4 mile north of the benchmark is another point with about the same elevation as the benchmark, so I hiked over to it. Some say that this area is higher than the benchmark, but it seems too close to call; so if you want to tag the highpoint it is best to go to both.

I descended the same way that I came up.
