The Little Buckskin Mountains are a small mountain range in La Paz County. The unnamed, unmarked highpoint has an estimated elevation of 2,820 feet and prominence of 610 feet. It is near a spot elevation of 2,804 feet that is marked on topo maps; however, that point on the topo is clearly lower than this nearby highpoint.
From the town of Wendon, I drove on Alamo Road to the junction with Old Alamo Road and parked at a large parking area. The road is paved all the way.
This was a straightforward hike. From the parking area, I could see the summit, so there was no uncertainty as to which way to go. I followed an old roadbed across the desert floor, then followed a wash and some horse trails over to an obvious and prominent ridge NW of the peak. From there I hiked up the spine of the ridge to the summit. It got a bit steep toward the top, but not ridiculously so. There were a few rocks and boulders just below the summit, but they were easy to go over or around.
The vegetation out here is very sparse, and is mostly small creosote bushes that are easy to walk around. It would be no problem to wear shorts on this hike.
There was a Lilley-MacLeod summit register log from 1988. Judging from the logbook entries, not many people hike this one, and there was a multi-year gap between many of the entries; although oddly I was the second person on the day to have hiked to the summit!
Synopsis
This is not a hall-of-fame hike by any means, but I thought that it was an enjoyable winter-time hike. There were no long dirt road drives to the TH, route finding was easy, and there was nothing tricky at all about the route. |

Wildflowers Observation Isolated I saw one solitary poppy blooming. That is about as isolated as you can get! |
