| no partners | | We try to get up to Big Kahuna every spring after our one trip about 10 years ago when the road in was muddy, rutty, and the trail was overrun with rivulets, Hawaiian Mist was more than a mist then and Big Kahuna was running big. Last year we ran into snow and ice above 5500 feet so we took crampons today. Didn’t need them. Trail was in great shape with four major streams crossing the trail on the way up to Big Kahuna, one around the one mile marker and the other three toward the end. There were some streams coming down at us on the trail around the 5500 foot level which we hiked through for maybe 500 feet. My hiking pants were a bit damp at the end. We weren’t the only folks who thought this was a Mazatzal Day as we counted 27 hikers and four dogs on the way back down and 17 cars in the parking lot. Normally, there might be one or two other hikers. There were no flowers on the trail. The best flowers we saw were on the way up and back around Bush Highway and Beeline, full of Brittle Bush, Owl Clover, Poppies and Globe Mallow plus some tall white flowers around Mt. Ord we didn’t identify. Barnhardt is one of Arizona’s great treasures and enough reason to get into better shape than I was today, as we set an all–time slow speed up and back. Will have to get in better shape for next year. All photos due to Phil who just came back from Patagonia and counts this as a “cool down.” |
