| partners | | I had not hiked Mt Ord in 5 years. @DixieFlyer had not hiked it yet this month, so Ray and I decided to get an updated status on the conditions for him. @DixieFlyer had been talking about a washout area that he nicknamed "Jaws". There was no indication of that washout and the entire stretch of FR27 had been driven by multiple vehicles recently.
Decent temps on the way up. The lack of a breeze at the start, turned into a 52 degree temp and at least a 52 mph gale force at the top. 4 guys in a pickup w/ trailer, that passed us on 626, were busy attempting to replace a busted up microwave dish.
We ate a shortened lunch, sheltered behind a building, trying unsuccessfully to stay warm.
On the way back down, I convinced Ray to take an off trail shortcut. It was a nice change from the road walk. I had to change it up a bit from previous trips to avoid the private property and it worked out.
We sailed the rest of the way to the TH. The flowers are starting to pop here. We had noticed very few on the way up, but many more on the way down.
It was good hiking with Ray again. |
