| no partners | | The plan was to hike into Fossil Springs on the Bob Bear Trail prior to the April 1st permit season. I was interested to see the flow with all the recent snow melt and rainfall.
On the drive in from the east, there was a "Closed" sign pasted over the top of the mileage indicator for the TH. A bit farther it said the gate was closed ahead, a bit farther the normally smooth road was deeply rutted from recent rains. The road ultimately got down to a single lane and very muddy, so I retreated.
Trying to find something up here that is not too muddy right now is tough. I settled on the Pine Strawberry Trail #15, that I'd not been on for 6 years. Working North to South I mostly kept mud free until I got closer to Hardscrabble Mesa Road. The final drop to the road was a muddy slippery mess, so I turned around at this point.
I'd noticed new trail and tags to the west, so on the return I followed this track. I don't know if this is intended to replace or augment, existing trail. This new section appears to have been cut probably in the fall. No new signage has been placed. This new section of trail cuts off some of the switchbacks. Temps were in the 40's for the hike and quite comfy for hiking. |
