It is an 18 mile drive on a well-graded dirt road. I was able to drive about 45 mph on the first 9 miles, but the road narrowed and steepened after that.
I drove all the way to the summit and parked at a gate just below the fire lookout that is atop the mountain. The lookout was manned and I talked to the ranger on duty for a while. He said that he had already spotted one fire this year, which was caused by lightning.
There are nice views up there so I walked around for a bit. I also dropped down a short distance to the Mount Withington Wilderness boundary and tagged the wilderness highpoint.
I saw 4 pronghorn on the drive up to the summit, and stopped and took a picture of them from my vehicle.
I enjoyed being on the summit so I am glad that I took the time to drive up there. I do not think that there are any hiking trails on this mountain, but if you wanted to hike to the summit I imagine that you could park on the road while driving up, and then hike on the road to the top. |
