I was wanting to do a higher elevation hike today so I figured that this one would fit the bill.

Dirt roads were completely dry on the drive to the TH, but FR 193 had a lot of potholes, especially close to 180. Like many AZ roads these days, 180 wasn't in the best of shape either.

The trail was in summertime conditions for the first 3 miles, some deadfall notwithstanding. In fact, this is the most deadfall that I have seen on this trail. Hopefully they will get a crew out there to clean it up before too long.

I started seeing some patchy snow on the trail at about 9,300 feet, and I put microspikes on at about 9,700 feet, around a mile before the summit. There were some deep snow drifts on the trail in some sections, some of which were on steep side slopes. To be safe, imho on those sections you'd really need crampons instead of microspikes, which I did not have. So I wound up busting up some steep, but snow free, slopes in some places to avoid some of the sketchy places. On the way back down, I bypassed some of the snow covered switchbacks by descending straight down the side of the mountain.

Not surprisingly, there was a good bit of snow around the cabin. From the cabin to the summit, I stayed on the trail part of the time, but other times it was easier to head off-trail up some snow-free slopes.

With the snow, the going was slower than normal, but I managed to make it the summit anyway. The weather cooperated, and it was a nice day for the hike.

I think that this is the first time that I have hiked Kendrick without seeing another hiker all day.
