Google maps tried to take me on a road with a no trespassing sign that was next to someone's house, so I had to take a circuitous route on some BLM roads bypass the private property. I made my way to a decent road that led to a microwave tower, and I parked just past the tower. I think that most any SUV could make it to where I parked, although you'd likely want 4WD if you drove to the end of the road, which was a little less than a mile from where I parked.
I hiked on the road, and then when the road ended I went into a wash for a short distance and picked up an old ATV road. Actually, on the ascent I missed the turn from the wash to the ATV road, and continued in the wash longer than I intended. Once I discovered my error I made my way in short order to the ATV road. I continued on the ATV road until I got to a saddle NE of the peak, then went up some steep, slippery slopes to the summit. There were nice views at the top, so it was a nice summit. I then returned back to my parking spot the same way that I came up.
I saw 2 javelina going down to a ravine while on the ATV road.
It was nice to be on the ATV road instead of bushwhacking, but the ATV road was steep in places and it had a lot of loose dirt and rock on it, which made the going pretty slow, both up and down.
Synopsis
This was a nice hike in most repects, but the tread on the ATV road and on the ascent to the summit was not the best, causing the hike to take about an hour longer than I anticipated. The views at the summit were nice, so there was a good payoff for my efforts. |
