Santa Gertudis
Got out early before it got hot.
Exit 29 to the West.
Right turn after passing Gasline road.
100 yards later follow the road to the Left because it goes around the wash instead of down it.
There used to be an SUV parked at the bottom. Probably took something with a track to get it out.
As soon as I crossed Gasline road to the North there is a faint road that heads toward a couple of water tanks and troughs. From where I parked it was about .75 miles to the tanks. Which are right beside the interstate.
My plan was to drop down in the wash and head up the nearest ridge back to the truck which would have been about a mile and a half round trip.
Instead, I followed a cow path that paralleled the interstate up to another ridge. From here I could look way down on the traffic. I wonder if anyone saw me up there.
From that point it was just a matter of heading up the ridge to the truck. No path and very few trails that seem to come and go. I’m not even sure how I stumbled on a big hole. It was surrounded by trees. Looked like a mining test hole. There are lots of them up on the mesa.
When I got back to gasline I decided to not take the level road back to the truck and instead went the 200+ feet into the wash and back out. This put me withing about 20 yards to the truck.
Light clouds and slight breeze made this enjoyable. I’ve had enough of hiking UP for a while.
6:47 left truck to go down faint road. Very rough with lots of loose rocks.
7:06 made it to the tank. Saw trail and followed to the south down into the canyon
7:15 Emerged from canyon to hillside right by the interstate fence. Took a 10 min break here
7:37 found what looked like a rock wall or foundation and the hole
8:03 gasline road to where SUV was parked
8:12 back at truck
3 quarts of water… back with less that one.
Very steep coming out of the canyon. Cow trail helped.
Chased a few deer out o the brush.
Nice quick morning hike
