I love this one!
This is one of 4 annual hikes I make. In 2019 I put a register on a ledge below the cave and someone signed it since the last time I was out this way. They also used some of the water I stashed under a rock about 20 feet away up the hill.
The Silverado made the last .5 mile past Toruno tank with no problem. Gotta use 4wd and there are some pretty serious holes and steps to a wide spot before the “road” descends into the canyon.
7:40 – left the truck
7:45 – over turned truck
7:52 at the dam
8:27 first rest top. Usually takes about 45 min to reach here from truck. Today 47 min.
8:49 – X marks the spot rock
8:53 canyon below butte 4833 usually an hour and 15 to this point. Today and hour and 13
9:36 Base of Butte – this time we took a beeline up instead of switchbacks. Insanely steep and slidey.
10:21 – in the Cave/hollow on the side of the butte
10:40 found Orange register after checking water stash
11:48 – sat on dam and rested for about 10 min before heading up and out
12:24 – Back at the truck

Chilly day. No clouds. Used about 2 quarts of water. There are cow and game trails that come and go that make the first two miles go faster. From the truck to the base of the butte is about 2 miles.
No trials up to the butte out of the canyon.
No trails from below butte to the Arch. Planning on doing another Annual trek to the Arch in March.
I would really like another trip the end of the ridge behind 4833 but it’s a 10-12 hour day. |
